May 13th — Statistic #10

From Lyra’s 2022 State of Workforce Mental Health Survey Report:

“A third of employees surveyed (33%) said they sought mental health care in 2021, up from just 19% who received treatment in 2020.”

My Thoughts and Comments:

We have to assume here that those who sought care were actually able to get the care they needed. Assuming this to be the case, a 14 point percentage increase is certainly good news.

We know from the research that about 50% of the employees who need care never actually seek it out. And this is very unfortunate if the care is available.

Employers should be striving to reach 100%. All of the employees who need treatment should actually receive the treatment they need.

Employers need to continue to do more to break down the barriers to treatment. These barriers include:

  • The presence of stigma in the workplace related to mental illness
  • Financial barriers
  • Accessing care can be challenging and frustrating
  • A lack of mental health literacy among employees
  • A lack of employee awareness about employer sponsored mental health related benefits
