May 5th — Statistic #4

From Lyra’s 2022 State of Workforce Mental Health Survey Report:

Employees reported the following mental health challenges:

  • Stress — 63% Up from 58% in 2020
  • Anxiety — 54% Up from 40% in 2020
  • Burnout — 32% Up from 29% in 2020
  • Depression — 25% Up from 23% in 2020

My Thoughts and Comments:

The fact that anxiety increased 14% from 2020 is not surprising given the number of COVID-19 cases rising in late 2021, inflation rising and the other uncertainties in life rising as well in late 2021. Uncertainty caused by the ever increasing pace of change generates anxiety as well.

The fact that 63% of the survey respondents reported stress is also not surprising given all the life and work challenges seen in late 2021. What is surprising is that with such a large percentage reporting stress that there is not a greater conversation in the workplace today about stress and how to best address it. Burnout has surpassed stress as the dominant topic of conversation in the workplace today, yet in this survey anyway, burnout was the third most reported challenge.
